In a reaction to the recent news of the heightened climate emergency, Rev Peter Hibberts and members of this circuit have felt compelled to write to their MP, Robert Jenrick and Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Grant Shapps.
The members of the Methodist Churches in Newark and Southwell (who are also working towards 'Eco Status', to be better stewards of the environment) have written an open letter which is hoping to gain support from those of all faiths and none as they attempt to persuade the government to prioritise care for the environment whilst also playing their part in everyday decisions.
The action was triggered by concern in the recent statement by the World Meteorological Organisation that "global temperatures are now more likely than not to breach 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming within the next five years". This was coupled with their understanding of projected £500m investment from the UK government subsidising Canadian, Norwegian and Israeli-owned businesses to exploit Rosebank oil reserves, off Shetland, which would see oil exploitation increase and continue beyond the 2050 commitment to deliver net zero.
The letter (which can be viewed here – click on the link to the right) already has support from all of the Methodist Churches in the area as well as other community and faith groups. It is hoped that Robert Jenrick will agree to a meeting with his constituents, hosted by the authors, locally to properly respond and demonstrate his care and commitment.
If you would like to add your support to the letter which will be officially sent at some point in July, please contact Rev Peter Hibberts by email peter.hibberts@methodist.org.uk.
